What Ingredients to Look For

When it comes time to making decisions on the best quality dog food for your dog, there are several considerations to take into account. The following considerations are suggested:
What to Look For
1. Whole Foods – The defintion of whole foods is foods that are minimally processed or refined, free from additives or other artifical substances. Foods that have been highly processed allow for more opportunity for adulteration, contamination and nutrient loss.
2. Made in the USA – Ingredients sourced locally are going to be the freshest. Other countries may not have strict quality standards. If you can’t tell where the products originated call the company and find out.
3. Natural sweetners – Look for sweeteners that originate from a natural or food based source like honey or applesauce.
4. Natural preservatives – Vitamin C, VitaminE or rosemary are common safe and effective natural preservatives. Some treats contain no preservatives. Make sure these are stored and used properly.
5. Organic Ingredients – Organic produce and other ingredients that are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation. Animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products do not take antibiotics or growth hormones. These ingredients are less likely to be contaminated, and receive extra scrutiny.
6. Single high-quality protein sources – The best proteins for your pet are meat-based proteins. Named meats, such as “chicken”, “beef” or “bison” have high bioavailability for dogs. These sources of protein have complete amino acid profiles for dogs and are easy for pets to digest.
Look for fewer ingredients overall. Less is more!!
